What is mold?

Mold is a microorganism belonging to the fungi family, whose role is to decompose organic matter. It spreads through spores, which are found everywhere—including inside buildings.

While mold is naturally present outdoors, it’s normal to find a certain concentration indoors. However, when indoor concentrations exceed outdoor levels, this indicates that internal conditions (such as materials, moisture, and temperature) are conducive to its growth. Mold can then affect health, causing symptoms such as headaches and irritation—especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) emphasizes that moisture is a critical factor for mold growth, which explains its frequent presence in basements, kitchens, and bathrooms. It is therefore essential to maintain appropriate humidity levels to prevent mold development.

Contrary to popular belief, mold isn’t always black—it can appear in a variety of colors. It is important to watch for signs of water infiltration (such as stains, peeling paint, warped floors, etc.).
The CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) recommends several preventive measures to limit fungal growth: control humidity, identify and repair leaks, and use bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans when needed.

In cases of fungal contamination, proper decontamination following current protocols is essential. Contaminated areas must be secured to prevent cross-contamination.

Asbestos and Mold remediation

At BioVac, our teams are trained to remove asbestos or mold containing materials according to the highest safety standards. Asbestos, a fibrous mineral used in many industries such as construction and automotive, becomes dangerous when friable. When fibers are released into the air, they can cause serious diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, or mesothelioma.

To prevent exposure, it’s essential to monitor the condition of asbestos-containing materials, particularly in buildings constructed between 1930 and 1990. We offer certified analysis services to verify the presence and condition of asbestos.

BioVac handles the removal of all types of asbestos or mold containing materials, including vermiculite, acoustic ceiling tiles, plaster walls, furnace panels, and pipe insulation. Our certified technicians follow the strictest safety regulations, ensuring fast, efficient, and health-safe removal. Rely on our specialized services for any asbestos-related interventions to protect your environment from associated risks.
